Steve Soderstrom is the owner of Backyard Sports Academy. Steve is the pitching instructor at BSA and also teaches sport-specific conditioning. Steve pitched at the collegiate and professional level and has a passion for teaching the game of baseball to our local athletes.

Steve was born and raised in Turlock, CA. He pitched for the Turlock Bulldogs and led them to the section championship his senior year. During Steve's senior year he was drafted in the MLB draft by the New York Mets in the 13th round. He declined the offer and opted to further his education and attend Fresno State where he continued his successful career as a starting pitcher. While pitching for the FSU Bulldogs, Steve was selected All-American pitcher and also played in the College World Series in 1991. After Steve finished his junior year at Fresno State he was again drafted in the MLB draft. He was chosen in the first round, sixth pick overall, by the San Francisco Giants. Steve was the highest draft pick in Fresno State history. He made his way through the Giant’s minor-league baseball system playing for the San Jose Giants (A), Shreveport Captains (AA), Phoenix Firebirds (AAA), and Fresno Grizzlies (AAA). Steve played for the San Francisco Giants in 1996 and 1998. He signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 1999 and played for the Louisville Riverbats (AAA). Steve retired from professional baseball in 2000 electing not to play overseas.

Steve and his family moved back to Turlock. Steve joined the family farming business, Soderstrom & Sons, and opened Backyard Baseball & Softball, an indoor instruction facility for young athletes. Steve then converted his baseball and softball facility into a multi-sport instructional facility...Backyard Sports Academy. Most recently, Steve and co-owner Jacob Payne have joined together to make Backyard Sports Academy the premier multi-sport instructional facility in the valley. Steve continues to spend time on the field coaching his sons and various BSA travel baseball teams. Steve is active in promoting the importance of education and currently serves as president of the Chatom Union School District Board of Education. Steve is married to Tami and they have two sons, Tate and Tyler.
